MY INSPIRATION
Dance of the Dragonflies Quilt Pattern
MY BLOCK
Quiltmaker assigns each 12" block to one of four categories
Applique, Foundation-Pieced, Mixed Technique and Pieced.
I used white Kona cotton for the background and gray Kona cotton for the back of the wings.
Kaffe Fassett fabric was perfect for the pop of color that I needed. Floriani polyester thread is my favorite applique thread. I used this thread to stitch the wings to the background fabric with a triple stitch blanket stitch. The inside color of the wing was appliqued with a simple blanket stitch using Aurifil monofilament thread.
EXTRA BONUS PROJECT
I made a table runner using these dragonflies.
Cut background 13 1/2 inches by width of fabric.
Cut off selvage. Use a square ruler to make end points.
Kaffe Fassett fabric for inside of wings, I used three different colors of green.
Text fabric for background fabric.
Fold fabric in half length wise and use a square ruler to cut a point on each end of table runner.
Table runner instructions
Trace pattern onto 805 Pellon Wonder Under Light.
Cut around the shapes and iron onto wrong side of fabric.
Cut on drawn line with applique scissors if you have them.
Inside details of dragonfly wings.
See directions below on how to assemble dragonflies.
Pick a large scale flower design for the corners.
Black and white fabric is the body and wings of the dragonflies.
Cut a piece of Pellon a little larger the corner piece.
Sticky rough glue side of Pellon facing up.
Use parchment paper to fuse to fabric so you don't mess up your ironing board or iron.
Fussy cut around edge of design. Peel off paper and place piece on top of table runner fabric.
Make sure you have parchment paper underneath the table runner and iron in place.
The top will hang over the background fabric, that's O.K., you will trim it after it is fused.
Turn to backside of table runner and trim off excess fused fabric.
If you see a blank area you don't like just add some extra leaves or flowers.
Dragonflies
Assemble your dragonflies on parchment paper first before you put them on the table runner.
The easy way to take the paper off the back of the pieces is to scratch the paper with a straight pin.
Check back to see the finished table runner.
I will bind it with the text fabric.
